Overview of the Tylenol Autism ADHD Lawsuit Settlement Amounts

Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is an over-the-counter pain medication used by millions of people every year.

The pain reliever has been historically deemed safe to use during pregnancy, but recent scientific evidence has raised concerns of potential health risks to children whose mothers took the drug while pregnant.

The Tylenol Autism ADHD Lawsuit claims that drug manufacturers and producers failed to warn consumers that prenatal acetaminophen exposure (taking Tylenol during pregnancy) may be linked to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other neurological disorders.

Legal action is taking place, with the Tylenol Autism lawsuits consolidated in multidistrict litigation (MDL).

The Acetaminophen – ASD/ADHD Products Liability Litigation (MDL 3043) is centralized in the U.S. District Court: Southern District of New York.

The multidistrict litigation is in its early stages currently, and information on settlement amounts for Tylenol lawsuits is not yet available.

Based on previous settlements in other dangerous drug lawsuits, our attorneys who are reviewing tylenol autism lawsuits estimate that settlements may fall between $50,000 to $500,000+ depending on certain factors in each lawsuit.

This estimation is by no means a guarantee of any compensation at the given dollar amount, it is purely an educated guess made in consideration of previous settlements with drug manufacturers.

If you or a loved one took Tylenol while pregnant, and the child was subsequently diagnosed with a developmental disorder such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), you may be eligible to file a Tylenol lawsuit.

What is the Tylenol Autism ADHD Lawsuit?

Tylenol Autism ADHD Lawsuits claim that manufacturers of generic acetaminophen knew or should have known that their products, when taken by pregnant women, resulted in an increased risk for children to develop:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD);
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); and
  • Other neurodevelopmental disorders

The Acetaminophen Lawsuits are based off growing scientific evidence that has found health risks for children of pregnant women who took the drug.

Scientific Evidence for Acetaminophen Autism ADHD Lawsuits

Scientific research conducted in the past decade has found certain risk factors in taking Acetaminophen during pregnancy.

Research has shown that fetal exposure to acetaminophen, especially prolonged exposure to the pain relief medication, present an increased risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Complex Developmental Disorder
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Other developmental disorders and neurological disorders

Scientific Research from Johns Hopkins University

A study published in 2019 by Johns Hopkins University has further explored the potential link between Tylenol or generic acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy and the development of neurological disorders and developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children.

Using data from the Boston Birth Cohort, the researchers measured the amount of acetaminophen exposure pregnant women had during gestation, finding that prenatal Tylenol exposure may indeed lead to higher risks for these conditions later on in life.

Johns Hopkins University researchers studied the umbilical cord blood samples of 996 births, and separating which cord blood samples contained amounts of acetaminophen from lowest to highest.

Compared to the lowest third of births with acetaminophen exposure:

  • The middle third of acetaminophen exposure was associated with a 2.26 times higher risk of ADHD and a 2.14 times higher risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • The group with the highest amount of exposure was associated with a 2.86 times higher risk of ADHD and a 3.62 times higher risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

These findings are critical for informing public policy and parental decisions concerning Tylenol usage during pregnancy.

Other Scientific Research Conducted on Acetaminophen’s Relation to Autism and ADHD

Multiple other research studies have come to similar conclusions on the links between acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy and fetal brain development.
