Zantac is a medication that was designed to treat digestive orders of various types and was made available as an OTC medication. Millions of people had taken this medicine before recent studies confirmed the presence of harmful compounds that can have some serious and life-threatening side effects.
It has been found that Zantac is laced with a potentially carcinogenic compound, NDMA.
Those who have suffered from the consequential damages or injuries of this medication may be eligible to file an Arkansas Zantac lawsuit. Keith Law Group has a team of drug injury lawyers with extensive experience in helping patients who have been suffering certain health conditions after taking Zantac. Ranitidine is the generic term for the commonly distributed and prescribed drug called Zantac, which came into being in the 1980’s. Zantac functions as an H2 blocker which essentially decreases the amounts of acid released into the stomach. Before the FDA’s recall of Ranitidine (Zantac) on April 1st, this pharmaceutical had been made available as an over the counter solution to digestive issues.
Ranitidine is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux and gastrointestinal conditions and available in dosages from 75 mg to 300 mg a day. It is known that some people used Ranitidine as an adjunctive treatment for allergic conditions.
The first warning from the FDA about the dangers of Zantac came out in 2019. The issue at hand was the presence of a specific compound on the list of known carcinogenic compounds present in Ranitidine. While the FDA admits that not all the samples tested contained toxic quantities of NDMA, many did. NDMA (N-Nitrosodimethylamine) is a known carcinogenic substance that can have an especially negative impact on the internal organs and mostly the liver.
Some of the known side effects of NDMA include:
While the FDA admits not all the Zantac samples tested contained toxic levels of NDMA, a considerable quantity did. Furthermore, it has come to their attention that the quantity of NDMA within Ranitidine increases during storage life. The test performed by the FDA and their third-party laboratories proved that this happened at a faster rate in warmer storage temperatures. This can cause the quantity of NDMA to become elevated above acceptable levels.
In the summer of 2019, the FDA became alerted to the presence of NDMA in various samples of ranitidine. Even though NDMA has the potential to be a carcinogenic compound, it is also present in many types of foods and even drinking water. Typically, NDMA exists in quantities too small to be a problem for the body to safely dispose of.
The levels of NDMA found in ranitidine were, in many cases, too low to be considered a threat. Nevertheless, exposure to high levels of NDMA in ranitidine over long periods of time increased the likelihood of cancer in humans. Because NDMA found many levels were very low, they issued a public health warning in September of 2019 and continued to investigate the potential threat these compounds presented to public health.
The FDA’s joint investigations with third-party laboratories soon uncovered another ugly truth about NDMA in ranitidine. The quantities of carcinogenic compounds within ranitidine increased as time went by and temperatures rose. On the 1st of April, 2020, the FDA made a public announcement that all Zantac and Ranitidine products be recalled, prescriptions withdrawn and all OTC ranitidine drugs be taken from the market immediately.
There have been a large number of lawsuits made on behalf of those patients who have been harmed and or injured because of Zantac or Ranitidine. Many of these patients have fallen sick or even died from cancerous conditions of the pancreas, stomach, colon, kidney, bladder, or colon.
If you or someone in your family has taken Zantac medication to address various conditions and subsequently developed a form of cancer, you may be eligible for compensation. This will involve filing an individual lawsuit that will seek compensation for the damages that were caused by this harmful drug.
You may be able to recover damages for the lost wages, medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of earning capacity and more. Call (479) 326-7734 to find out more about what types of compensatory damages you are eligible to collect.
On the other hand, if you have taken Zantac but never developed cancer, you may still be able to seek compensation. This will involve filing a Class Action Lawsuit against Zantac’s manufacturers. This will be done on the basis that the manufacturers of the drug failed to effectively warn the public of the risks involved with taking their medication and were making a profit by selling defective products.
In a class-action lawsuit you will seek compensation for the purchasing of a prescription or generic drug. You will not have to prove you were injured or harmed in this class action lawsuit. Your claim is based on the economic losses you have suffered in purchasing Zantac or Ranitidine believing it would be safe and then being exposed to life-threatening illness.
